The impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and Complex Trauma on Brain Development:
- More than a 1/3 of children in our community live in family circumstances with likely exposure to chronic family violence.
- Children exposed to violence are 4 times more likely to be involved in the juvenile offender system.
- Children exposed to ACEs are 3 times more likely to drop out of school.
The structures and functions of the brain are responsible for cognitive,
emotional, and behavioral development and regulation. The research
clearly demonstrates that ACEs have a direct impact on brain development
and health outcomes.
The cost of ACEs across early learning, K-12, juvenile courts, mental health
providers and healthcare systems is estimated at $258,000,000 per day.
This major public health problem has obvious implications for early
learning, K-12, courts and other helping systems. For more
